Retirement Helmet Shield

From about $150

A handmade wooden commemorative shield modeled on the fire helmet shield — your company number, rank, name, and years of service, with every color and letter inlaid into the wood itself. No stickers, no laminate — just solid, lasting inlay. A classic 14-inch-wide oak shield with two or three colors runs about $150; larger sizes, added colors, and finer detail adjust the price. A distinguished way to mark a retirement or promotion.

Crafted to Honor a Legacy

Thirty years in the fire service — paramedic, firefighter, officer

Every piece I make is meant to honor a legacy — a career given to the fire service, a promotion earned, a retirement well deserved. Having spent thirty years on the job myself, I understand what those milestones represent, and I hold every commission to that standard: distinguished, enduring, and worthy of the name it carries.

And after thirty years, my own retirement isn't far off — which means I've sat through enough send-offs to know exactly what makes a gift worth keeping, and what quietly ends up in a drawer. I build for the first kind.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

What do you make?

Custom wooden commemorative shields and tributes for the fire service — retirement helmet shields, plaques, department crests, wood flags, and one-of-a-kind commissions. The retirement helmet shield is my signature ready-to-order piece; everything else is custom commission work.

How much does a helmet shield cost?

A classic 14-inch-wide oak shield with two or three colors runs about $150. Larger sizes, added colors, and finer detail adjust the price. For anything custom, reach out and I'll give you a firm quote.

Are the colors and lettering inlaid, or stickers?

Every color and letter is inlaid into the wood itself — never stickers or laminate. That's what makes each piece solid and lasting; it won't peel or fade over time.

Can you make a fully custom piece?

Absolutely. Retirement plaques, department crests, presentation pieces, gifts, and commemoratives of all kinds. Send your idea along with names, dates, department, and any reference photos, and I'll work up a design.

What wood do you use?

Solid local hardwoods — oak, walnut, and maple — sourced here in Northern Illinois.

Do you ship?

Yes. Finished pieces are carefully packed and shipped to your door.

How long does a commission take?

It depends on the piece and how busy the shop is at the time. I'll give you a realistic timeline when we discuss your project, so you can plan around a retirement date or event.

Who makes them?

Every piece is handmade by a thirty-year fire-service veteran — paramedic, firefighter, and officer — in a Northern Illinois shop. Having been on the job, I know what these milestones mean to the people who receive them.
